After what I thought was sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity when I saw them last May, Copenhagen, Denmark's Efterklang is making a return to Tucson this coming March. They'll play at Plush (again) on March 11th with touring band member, Peter Broderick, who will be sure to hold his own when he opens up for the band with his solo show throughout the tour. If you haven't already heard Efterklang or Broderick, you're really missing out. Efterklang is undoubtedly one of the most eclectic bands around. They blend electronic music with classical instruments, a touch of folk, pop, and what I'd classify as choral music. And they pull it off. The music that five or ten of them create often sounds like it's being backed by ten times that many people. I've definitely never seen or heard anybody like them.
Almost everybody in the band sings and from what I remember, they're all multi-instrumentalists too; Broderick might just be the most individually talented of the bunch, or at least that's the feeling I get from the amount of quality releases the endlessly ambitious 21-year-old already has under his belt and his numerous collaborations which span from Horse Feathers and Loch Lomond to Library Tapes, Efterklang and even the upcoming M. Ward record. Pretty impressive stuff for such a young musician.
I'd expect that the Efterklang/Peter Broderick tour will be one of the highlights of the year for all those who are lucky enough to see it. If the band's last stop through Tucson was any indication, they'll probably surprise a lot of people who aren't so familiar with them. Though I don't exactly expect to be given a shaker and asked by Efterklang's guitarist, Frederik, to join them on stage for my favorite song "Chapter Six" again, I have no doubt that they'll be just as buoyant and energetic as they were the last time around. There. Are you convinced?
